Why True Power Looks Like a Shepherd - N.T. Wright - 238 - FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye
FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye - Healthy Leadership for Life and MinistryAbout this episode
N.T. Wright explores the surprising picture of power in Isaiah and what the suffering Servant reveals about God’s kingdom, leadership, and impact.
What does strength actually look like in Christian leadership? N.T. Wright joins Jason Daye to explore how Isaiah 40–55 challenges our assumptions about power, influence, impact, and the kingdom of God.
Isaiah announces that God is coming in power, and yet gives us the image of a shepherd gathering lambs into his arms. As the story unfolds, power becomes even more surprising through the suffering Servant. For Wright, these images help us understand the Messiah Jesus is and the kingdom he came to establish.
Wright, one of the world’s leading New Testament scholars and author of Into the Heart of Isaiah: The Meaning and Message of Isaiah 40–55, joins Jason to explore what happens when God’s kingdom confronts the world’s assumptions about power. Their conversation moves from Isaiah and Jesus into questions about leadership, control, empire, and why Christians can be drawn toward different forms of power.
Together, Tom and Jason discuss:
- What Isaiah may be showing us by placing strength and shepherding side by side
- Why the suffering Servant changes the way we understand kingdom power and victory
- What Jesus meant when he contrasted his way of leading with rulers who “boss and bully”
- Why some pastors are questioning the shepherd metaphor and what may be at stake when we replace it
- How ministry leaders can pursue impact without adopting the assumptions of empire
- What faithful leadership looks like when the power of God’s kingdom looks very different from the power our culture celebrates
For pastors and ministry leaders who feel pressure to be stronger, more influential, or more forceful to make a difference, this conversation invites a deeper question: Are we leading according to the kingdom Jesus announced, or the forms of power we have learned to admire?
