FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye - Healthy Leadership for Life and Ministry

About this episode

Chuck DeGroat explores why spiritual formation cannot be rushed and how the pace, pressure, and expectations of ministry can outpace the deeper work God is doing in us.

Can ministry move faster than our formation? In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, therapist and spiritual director Chuck DeGroat joins host Jason Daye to explore why pastors and ministry leaders cannot rush the deeper work of becoming.

Ministry often rewards what is fast, efficient, productive, and measurable. Leaders can be thrust into responsibility, learn how to perform the work of ministry, and even become highly competent long before deeper spiritual and emotional formation has had time to take root. Chuck describes formation as a process of “ripening,” reminding us that genuine maturity develops slowly and cannot simply be accelerated to meet the demands around us.

Chuck is a professor of pastoral care and Christian spirituality at Western Theological Seminary, a licensed therapist, spiritual director, and founder of the Soul Care Collaborative. Drawing from his latest book, Who You're Becoming, he helps us consider what happens when ministry keeps moving but our souls need time, attention, and care.

Together they discuss:

• What happens when ministry responsibility develops faster than the person carrying it

• Why some patterns that help leaders succeed early can become costly later

• How spiritual practices can quietly become another form of striving

• What pastors may mistake for vulnerability, even when they are sharing openly

• Why the pursuit of impact can make faithful ministry harder to recognize

• What seasons of disruption may reveal about the way a leader has been formed

If you're a pastor or ministry leader feeling the pressure to keep producing, growing, and carrying more, this conversation offers an invitation to pay attention to the slower work happening beneath the surface. Formation cannot be microwaved or manufactured. God is at work in who you are becoming, and that work often happens at a pace very different from the pace ministry demands.
