When we embrace the way of Jesus—embodying His beatitudes and working them out in our lives—we should expect persecution. "Beatitude people" run counter to the world's ways, and opposition will come. Just as it was for the prophets, so it will be for the Christian.

When conflict arises, we either shrink deep into our shells or lash out quills first. We then mistake any temporary cessation of hostility as peace. But true peace only arrives through Jesus Christ. Through Him, we can lay aside the disposable title of “peacekeeper” in exchange for “peacemaker.”

Culturally and spiritually, as a means to adapt and survive, we harden our external selves and hide away the intimate and unsightly parts of our lives. But Christ loves us too much to leave us there. He is the way to a pure heart.

As those who have received an inconceivable mercy, we seek to mirror Christ in the pouring out of mercy to others. We move towards others’ brokenness, pain, and debt, making it our own. Mercy is costly. Mercy multiplies. Mercy matters.

Admiring a menu does not satisfy our hunger. While spiritual interest tends to remain theoretical, spiritual hunger draws us toward Jesus in actual dependence. As those hungry and thirsty, we desire for God to make right what we cannot on our own.

We often associate “meekness” with “weakness.” But Christ is the picture of the Beatitudes and the image of the invisible God. Christ described Himself as “gentle and lowly.” He had perfect strength under perfect control. May we become like Jesus in His humility.

We tend to treat our sorrow as something to be silenced and others’ grief as a threat to our comfort. If we numb ourselves from the pain of life, we have not saved ourselves from grief, but robbed ourselves of true joy. Jesus has a better way for us.

The Christian life is not us moving up and to the right, but rather a series of peaks and valleys, ever progressing us forward on the long journey home to God. At the pace we run, it is easy to pass by and forget all that our God is doing around the world and right here in Flower Mound, Texas. We bless God for the forgiveness of sins, the healing of diseases, the redemption of stories, and the hearing and answering of our prayers!

While the world offers disintegration, Jesus Christ provides soul-level integration. So we look to Him, and we labor to see Him rightly. We behold Christ in His glory, seeking to grow more like Him and to gather together those who need Him.
