In today's uplifting news, a Pennsylvania elementary school finally opened a time capsule that had been buried for fifty years. Claysville Elementary School in Claysville, PA, buried the capsule in 1976, and students and teachers gathered in the school auditorium to see what had been hidden away for half a century. Some students guessed correctly what would be inside, including money and old pencils. A former fourth-grade teacher who had taught at the school when the capsule was buried recalled placing a felt eraser and pieces of chalk inside. When the capsule was opened, it revealed Bicentennial coins, a two-dollar bill, photographs, newspapers, stamps, classroom supplies, and a congratulatory letter written to the students by then President Gerald Ford. A manual calculator from a math classroom was also inside, a device many of today's students had never seen before. To mark the occasion, the current students and teachers created a new time capsule to be buried and opened in 2076, continuing the tradition for the next generation. The 50 year old exercise psychologist was diagnosed with incurable stage 4 breast cancer two years ago and has undergone radiotherapy, liver surgery, and a double mastectomy. She trained for an entire year to prepare for the climb, which she first completed over two decades earlier. Upon reaching the summit, she encouraged others facing cancer to keep taking steps forward no matter how difficult the journey. The coldest nights on the mountain proved to be the hardest part of the climb, as her body temperature dropped while she rested in her tent. She raised more than $100,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support during the expedition and also gathered research on how low oxygen levels affected her cancer markers, hoping her data could benefit future patients and doctors. She has also completed the Everest Marathon and climbed Mount Aconcagua, Elbrus, and Kilimanjaro, and she hopes her climb inspires others to believe they can accomplish big things despite their diagnoses. A Texas woman survived a terrifying highway accident when a three-foot piece of rebar flew through her windshield and struck her glasses without leaving a scratch. She was driving through Flint, Texas, while delivering Instacart orders when a utility truck passed in the opposite direction and a piece of rebar came loose, flying directly toward her car. She had no time to react or move out of the way. The rebar sliced vertically through the windshield, hit her glasses, and landed in her lap, leaving her with only minor scratches. EMTs who responded to the scene told her she should not have survived the impact. She credits her survival entirely to God, saying she has no explanation for how she walked away unharmed. Lauren Stevens, 24, began receiving text messages on her work phone meant for someone else, all addressed to "Vern Dog." Curious, she searched online and discovered the messages were meant for Verner, a 72-year-old San Francisco photographer who had spent decades traveling the world behind a camera. What started as a mix-up grew into a genuine connection as emails turned into phone calls, phone calls turned into video chats, and eventually the two were spending time together in person, singing karaoke and making TikToks together. As Verner struggled financially in an increasingly digital world, Lauren stepped in to help by sharing his photography online and starting a GoFundMe that raised more than $40,000 in his support. What began as a wrong number became a rare and meaningful friendship that changed both of their lives.
