When Intercession Becomes Hard: Learning to Pray in Spirit and in Truth
**When Intercession Becomes Hard: Praying in Spirit and in Truth**
What happens when intercession becomes hard? When praying for others feels difficult, our hearts feel distant, or we simply don't know what to say?
In this episode, we take an honest look at **intercessory prayer** — what it is, why we do it, and who we are called to pray for. We explore why something that can be such an important part of our Christian life can sometimes feel challenging or even impossible.
We look at some of the things that can get in the way of prayer, including **unforgiveness, bitterness, resentment and ingratitude**. What happens when we're struggling to pray for someone who has hurt or disappointed us? And how do we move forward when our feelings don't seem to cooperate?
One of the things we explore is the idea of **praying from obedience rather than emotion**. Sometimes we may need to begin in a “head place” — choosing to pray because we know God has asked us to — before prayer eventually becomes something that flows more naturally from the heart. Like any muscle, the practice of intercession can grow stronger with use.
We also consider the reality of **busy lives** and how the demands of work, family, relationships and everyday life can leave little space for prayer. How can we make room for intercession without turning prayer into another task or source of guilt?
Another important part of the conversation is the influence of **church culture and expectations around prayer**. What is a “good” prayer supposed to sound like? Does it need to be long, spontaneous, emotional, eloquent or spoken out loud?
This leads us into a conversation about **neurodiversity and prayer**. Churches are often made up of people with very different ways of thinking, communicating and processing the world. Yet expectations about how prayer should look can sometimes reflect predominantly neurotypical ways of communicating. Could this leave some neurodivergent people feeling that they aren't praying “properly”?
We explore the freedom that comes from recognising that **prayer doesn't have to look the same for everyone**. People may pray through words, silence, written prayers, structured prayers, spontaneous thoughts or other forms of communication. The expression may be different, while the relationship with God remains genuine.
Ultimately, we come back to Jesus' words about worshipping **in Spirit and in Truth**. Perhaps prayer isn't about finding the one perfect format or performing prayer in the way somebody else does it. Perhaps it is about coming honestly before God and allowing Him to meet us where we are.
**In this episode, we explore:**
* What intercession is and why we pray for others
* Why intercessory prayer can become difficult
* Unforgiveness, bitterness and ingratitude
* Praying from obedience when emotions aren't there
* Moving from a “head place” to a “heart place”
* How busy lives can hinder prayer
* Church expectations around prayer
* Neurodiversity and different ways of praying
* Freedom from comparison and performance
* What it means to pray in **Spirit and Truth**
If you've ever struggled with intercession, felt guilty about the way you pray, or wondered whether your prayer life is “good enough,” this episode offers an invitation to step away from performance and rediscover a more honest and authentic approach to prayer.
**There isn't one perfect way to pray. The invitation is simply to come before God in Spirit and in Truth.**
