As a rule, parents are meant to be magnificent role models for their children. They nurture, they guide, they protect, they shape the next generation with quiet strength and sacrificial love.

But we’ve all heard of parents who do damage to their children, parents whose influence was destructive rather than life‑giving. And the Bible contains a story of such a parent: on this occasion, a mother, a woman whose choices harmed her son and destroyed her grandchildren.

It is a tragic and sobering story. But it is also a story filled with lessons we desperately need in our own time.
