But no human voice carries the authority of Scripture simply because we trust the person speaking.

Sometimes the shift is subtle.

“I think this is unwise” becomes “God doesn’t want you to do this.”

“Talk to me before you decide” slowly becomes “You shouldn’t decide without me.”

And before long, good counsel can begin functioning like a command.

Healthy spiritual authority should make believers more rooted in Christ—not more dependent on someone else’s approval.

Christian leaders can teach, counsel, warn, encourage, and correct.

But we only speak with God’s authority where God has actually spoken.

When Scripture is clear, be clear.

When Scripture gives wisdom, offer wisdom.

And when Scripture leaves room, leave room.

Biblical authority is real.

But it is borrowed authority.

Christ is the Head of His Church.

And His Word gets the final word.
