Biblical Stewardship: Stewards Don’t Own the Flock — Extra Shot

What does biblical stewardship mean within the Church—and how can faithful responsibility quietly become control?

The New Testament uses the Greek word oikonomos for a steward or household manager. A steward may carry significant authority, oversee resources, and make important decisions—but never becomes the owner.

That distinction matters in the Church.

Pastors, elders, ministry leaders, volunteers, and members are entrusted with real responsibility. We are called to teach, lead, protect, serve, give, and care for one another. But the Church, the mission, and the people never become ours.

They belong to Jesus.

Using Matthew 25 and Acts 20, this episode explains why Christian ministry must be measured by more than attendance, visibility, influence, finances, or apparent success. The central question is not merely, “Did it work?”

The deeper question is:

Was it faithful to the will of the Owner?

But a steward remembers the boundary:

The flock belongs to Jesus.

The mission belongs to Jesus.

The outcome belongs to Jesus.

We teach, guard, care, and serve with open hands—because stewards do not own the flock.

The Shepherd does.
