Church Tradition or Biblical Command? — Extra Shot

How can Christians tell the difference between a biblical command and a familiar church tradition?

In this Extra Shot of Grace in the Grind, Cody Hudson examines how practical church customs can gradually begin to feel like biblical requirements—even when Scripture never commanded them.

Pews, rows of chairs, worship styles, dress expectations, service times, church buildings, bulletins, and the order of a Sunday service may all be useful. But usefulness does not automatically make a practice biblical, and familiarity does not give a tradition divine authority.

This episode introduces a practical four-part test for examining church practices:

• Commanded — Did Christ tell the Church to do this? • Modeled — Does the New Testament show a meaningful apostolic pattern? • Permitted — Has Scripture left room for Christian wisdom and freedom? • Familiar — Are we treating a repeated custom like a biblical requirement?

The conversation also explores adiaphora—matters Scripture neither commands nor forbids—and why Christians must be careful not to bind another believer’s conscience where God has allowed freedom.

This is not an argument against pews, church buildings, liturgy, contemporary worship, programs, or organized Sunday services. It is also not an argument that every new or informal approach is automatically more biblical.

Traditional churches can mistake inherited practices for divine commands. Innovative churches can mistake novelty for spiritual maturity. Neither tradition nor innovation is the final authority. Scripture is.
